Deputy Holetzky responded to a fraud report after a victim received a suspicious email claiming to be from UPS regarding a package delivery.
Shortly after opening the message, the victim’s computer began displaying pop-up messages claiming the system was frozen and directing them to call a support number. The victim contacted the number and spoke with someone claiming to represent Apple.
During the call, the suspect attempted to collect personal information and later another individual called claiming to be from the Federal Trade Commission. The second caller instructed the victim to withdraw funds and transfer them to a supposed FTC escrow account.
The victim became suspicious and ended the call before sending any money. The victim later confirmed the scam with the legitimate FTC and notified their bank of the attempted fraud.
