Deputy Pitts responded to a fraud report involving a scam targeting a resident’s credit. The victim received a phone call from a suspect claiming they could improve the victim’s credit score.
The suspect instructed the victim to deposit fraudulent checks sent via email and then repay the funds using gift cards. After making several deposits and reimbursements, the victim contacted their bank and discovered the checks were fake.
The bank has since closed the account and launched a fraud investigation. Authorities remind residents to be cautious of unsolicited financial offers and to never send money or gift cards to unknown individuals.
