A fraud investigation is underway after a Stafford resident reported a stolen and altered check. The victim told Deputy Hart they had mailed a check while heading out shopping, but later discovered an issue when their card was declined at checkout.
After reviewing their bank statements, the victim realized the payment had not gone through and that the check had been intercepted and altered by a suspect. The victim promptly contacted their bank and filed a report with authorities.
