A 19-year-old Fredericksburg man was killed in a late-night shooting Wednesday, and police have detained a person of interest as the homicide investigation continues.
According to the Fredericksburg Police Department, officers were dispatched to the 200 block of Ivanhoe Court at approximately 11:08 p.m. on June 24 after the Fredericksburg E-911 Center received reports of shots fired. The first officer arrived within minutes and found an adult male suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses provided officers with a description of a suspect, and responding officers quickly located a nearby individual matching that description. Police detained 24-year-old Emmanuel Killeen of Fredericksburg and recovered two firearms from his possession.
At this time, Killeen has not been charged in connection with the homicide but is considered a person of interest in the investigation. He has been charged with two counts of carrying a concealed weapon and is being held without bond at the Rappahannock Regional Jail.
The victim was identified as Oscar Ruiz Mejia Jr., 19, of Fredericksburg. Police said his family has been notified.
Investigators believe a verbal argument occurred between the victim and another individual shortly before the shooting. Detectives continue to process evidence and are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has security camera footage from the area between 10:30 p.m. on June 24 and midnight on June 25 to contact the Fredericksburg Police Department.
Police have increased patrols in the area as the investigation remains active.
