A Stafford County resident reported losing money after scammers allegedly posed as members of the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputy Pitts responded to Cabinet Maker Drive after the victim reported receiving a call from suspects claiming the victim had missed jury duty and had a warrant for their arrest. The callers allegedly told the victim that a fee could be paid to avoid arrest and instructed the victim to transfer money through Bitcoin and a wire transfer.
After sending the funds, the victim began to suspect it was a scam and found information from the Sheriff’s Office warning that the agency will not demand payment of a fine to avoid arrest. The victim subsequently stopped communicating with the suspects.
No suspects had been identified at the time of the report.
