The Stafford County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an impersonation scam that resulted in a victim transferring money through Bitcoin.
Deputy Tate responded after the victim reported receiving a call from a suspect claiming to represent the Sheriff’s Office. The caller allegedly claimed the victim had an arrest warrant for failing to appear in court and sent the victim fraudulent images of arrest warrants.
The suspect then instructed the victim to withdraw money and transfer it through Bitcoin to avoid arrest. After transferring the funds, the victim recognized the scam, contacted their bank and stopped communicating with the suspect.
