Time: August 8, 2:07 p.m.

A Stafford County resident lost money in an alleged Sheriff’s Office impersonation scam involving a false claim about missed jury duty.

Deputy Eastman responded after the victim reported receiving a call from a suspect claiming to be with the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office. The caller allegedly told the victim that they had missed jury duty and had a warrant for their arrest.

The suspect instructed the victim to transfer money through Bitcoin to obtain bond. The victim transferred the funds before realizing it was a scam.

Deputy Eastman advised the victim that law enforcement agencies do not call people and demand money to avoid arrest.
