A Stafford County resident avoided losing money after recognizing an alleged Best Buy Geek Squad scam.
The victim told the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office that they received an email claiming a computer protection plan had been renewed. After calling the number provided, a suspect claimed a credit would be issued but then allegedly entered the wrong amount.
The suspect then claimed the victim’s account would be flagged for money laundering unless the funds were returned. The victim recognized the scam and did not send any money.
A deputy advised the victim to verify future incoming calls and notify their bank.
