A resident avoided monetary loss after becoming suspicious during an alleged airline ticket scam on Dover Place.
Deputy Ramos responded after the victim reported receiving a phone call from someone claiming to represent American Airlines. The caller claimed the victim had purchased three airline tickets to China. When the victim denied making the purchase, the call was transferred to another person claiming to be with the New York Police Department.
The second caller instructed the victim to provide personally identifiable information for confirmation. The victim became suspicious and ended contact with the callers before contacting the legitimate NYPD, which advised that the call was a scam.
No monetary loss had occurred at the time of the report. Deputy Ramos advised the victim to monitor their credit reports and file an identity theft report with the Federal Trade Commission.
