Apple and FTC Impersonation Scam Reported on Buchanan Court

Location: Buchanan Court, Stafford VA
Time: September 28, 7:20 p.m.

A fraud attempt involving suspects allegedly impersonating Apple and the Federal Trade Commission was reported on Buchanan Court.

The victim told the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office that a pop-up notification claimed the victim’s phone had been compromised. After calling the number provided, the victim spoke with suspects claiming to represent Apple and the FTC. The suspects allegedly said the victim’s account had been compromised and instructed the victim to transfer money to protect the funds.

When an online transfer could not be completed, the suspects allegedly instructed the victim to withdraw the money from a bank. Bank personnel alerted the victim to the scam, and the victim stopped communicating with the suspects. The bank froze the account.

Deputy Ramos advised the victim to freeze their credit, file an identity theft report and remove any remote access to their devices.
