The Stafford County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a reported banking scam in which a resident received a fraudulent telephone call followed by an unauthorized withdrawal.
Deputy Ramos responded to Courthouse Road on October 8 after the victim reported receiving a call from individuals claiming to represent Navy Federal Credit Union.
The callers claimed that fraudulent activity had occurred on the victim’s account and provided the last four digits of the victim’s card number.
The victim became suspicious and contacted the legitimate credit union. Bank representatives confirmed that the call was a scam, froze the card and began an investigation.
Although the victim obtained a replacement card, a subsequent notification indicated that an unauthorized withdrawal had occurred.
Deputy Ramos provided the victim with a police report and advised monitoring credit reports for additional suspicious activity.
