The Stafford County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fraud case involving an altered mortgage payment check.
Deputies responded to Landmark Drive after a resident reported mailing a check for a mortgage payment that was never received by the intended recipient.
The victim later learned the check had been altered and deposited through a mobile banking transaction by an unknown suspect.
The victim notified the bank, which has opened its own investigation into the fraudulent transaction. The Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the case.
