A Stafford County resident reported becoming the victim of check fraud after a tax payment was allegedly altered and cashed for a different amount.
Deputies responded to Bridgewater Circle after the victim reported mailing a check to pay taxes. The victim was later notified by their bank that the check had been altered before being cashed.
A deputy assisted the victim with submitting the tax payment online while the fraud investigation continues.
