A Stafford resident fell victim to a scam involving fraudulent arrest warrants after receiving a call from a suspect claiming they had missed a federal court appearance.
The caller alleged the victim had signed for a certified letter and instructed them to send money via Bitcoin to resolve the issue. The victim complied before realizing the situation was a scam.
Deputy Sullivan advised that legitimate law enforcement agencies do not request payment over the phone and that real warrants are served in person. The victim was encouraged to notify their bank as part of the follow-up.
