Bitcoin Scam Reported on Smith Street

Stafford deputies are warning residents about scam calls after a victim reported losing money to someone impersonating law enforcement.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the suspect claimed to be a member of the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office and falsely told the victim they had an active arrest warrant. The caller instructed the victim to send money through Bitcoin to pay bond costs.

After transferring the funds, the victim reportedly received several additional scam calls.

Deputies advised the victim about the fraudulent scheme and warned against responding to similar calls.
