What started as a simple online return turned into a costly lesson for a woman on Cork Street. At 4:41 p.m. on April 3, Deputy T.K. Phillips responded to a fraud report after a resident was scammed while trying to return pants using her iPad.
Instead of a smooth return, a pop-up appeared warning her the device was compromised. When she called the number on the screen, the scammer convinced her to withdraw money and convert it to Bitcoin.
The sheriff’s office is reminding residents to be cautious about pop-ups and unsolicited tech support offers, especially ones that ask for financial transactions.
