A Stafford resident was defrauded of $260,000 through a sophisticated cryptocurrency investment scam conducted via WhatsApp. The victim was lured in by a fraudulent data mining company that initially showed positive returns. However, the scam escalated when the perpetrators began demanding additional funds and issued threats. Multiple wire transfers were made before the victim recognized the operation as fraudulent. Deputy C.M. Hidalgo is handling the ongoing investigation.
