The Stafford County Sheriff’s Office investigated a fraud complaint after a victim reported losing money through what they believed was a cryptocurrency trading website.
According to the sheriff’s office, the victim visited a website where Bitcoin was used to make cryptocurrency trades. The victim made trades they believed had generated earnings.
When the victim attempted to withdraw those earnings, they were told they first needed to pay a percentage of the earnings. The victim made the requested payment but did not hear anything further.
The victim then contacted the website’s customer service and was told an additional capital gains tax had to be paid. At that point, the victim reported the incident as a scam.
Deputy K. R. Sprinkles handled the fraud complaint.
