Driver Found Asleep Behind Wheel on Courthouse Road Charged with DUI

Location: Courthouse Road, Stafford VA
Time: 5/5 2:27 a.m.

Deputy Frye responded to a suspicious vehicle complaint after reports indicated a vehicle remained stopped through multiple green light cycles on Courthouse Road.

When the deputy approached the vehicle, the driver was reportedly asleep behind the wheel while the vehicle remained in drive. After waking the driver, deputies observed several signs of intoxication, including glassy eyes, an unsteady balance, and the odor of alcohol. Open alcoholic beverages were also reportedly found inside the vehicle.

Authorities said the driver admitted to drinking earlier in the day. An investigation further revealed the driver did not possess a valid license and the vehicle’s inspection had expired. Following field sobriety testing and a breath test at the Sheriff’s Office, the driver’s blood alcohol content was found to be above the legal limit.

Jose Machado, 48, of Stafford, was charged with driving under the influence, drinking while operating a motor vehicle, driving without a license, expired inspection, and a traffic violation. Machado was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail on a secured bond.
