A Stafford family avoided becoming victims of an impersonation scam after a caller falsely claimed a relative had been jailed.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the suspect contacted the victim’s parents and pretended to be associated with Prince William County law enforcement. The caller claimed the victim was incarcerated and requested money for bail.
The family contacted their relative directly and quickly realized the story was false. No money was transferred.
