A Stafford resident lost money after falling victim to a fraudulent rental property scheme, according to the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators said the victim found a home listed online and completed an application process before being contacted by someone claiming to own the property. The suspect requested a security deposit, which the victim paid.
Afterward, the suspect demanded the first month’s rent before sending keys to the property. The victim later contacted the legitimate property owner and learned the listing was fraudulent.
Deputies advised the victim to freeze their bank account and monitor credit activity for suspicious transactions.
