Fredericksburg Police Investigate Canal Path Sexual Assault

Fredericksburg, VA — Police are investigating a reported sexual assault that occurred around 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 19, along the canal path near Cossey Pond — between Washington Avenue and Emancipation Highway.

According to Fredericksburg Police, the suspect is described as a man, roughly 5’4” to 5’5” tall, medium build, and possibly Middle Eastern, Hispanic, or Indian. He was wearing dark clothing and reportedly spoke with an accent. He was last seen running toward Emancipation Highway and Mary Washington Boulevard.

No weapons were involved, police said.

Detectives are actively investigating the incident and are asking anyone with information, especially residents or businesses in the area with video footage, to come forward. The canal path is a popular route for walkers and runners, and police say any detail — no matter how small — could help.

As a precaution, Fredericksburg Police have increased patrols along the path and are urging residents to stay alert when walking after dark.

“We take incidents like this very seriously,” the department said in a statement, noting they are “using all resources available” to pursue the case and ensure public safety.

Safety Reminders for Residents

Police are encouraging everyone to take extra care when walking in dimly lit or secluded areas, especially at night. They recommend walking with a friend and reporting anything unusual right away.

If you or someone you know has experienced sexual assault, the Rappahannock Council Against Sexual Assault (RCASA) offers support and resources. Visit rcasa.org or call their 24/7 hotline at (540) 371-1666.

This remains an active investigation.
