Gold Coin Scam Costs Stafford Resident Thousands on Bell Air Court

Location: Bell Air Court, Stafford VA
Time: June 29 at 9:38 a.m.

The Stafford County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a sophisticated fraud scheme in which scammers convinced a Stafford resident to turn over money and gold coins over the course of more than a month.

According to deputies, the victim received repeated phone calls from individuals claiming to represent Walmart or the Social Security Administration. The callers falsely claimed the victim’s identity had been compromised and was being used to open bank accounts connected to organized crime in other countries.

The scammers instructed the victim to withdraw funds, purchase gold coins, surrender monetary assets, and even change their phone number to avoid being implicated in the fictitious investigation.

The scam was uncovered after the victim’s family learned about the situation and advised the victim that the calls were fraudulent. The victim then contacted the bank and ended all communication with the suspects.

No suspects have been identified, and the investigation remains ongoing.
