STAFFORD, VA — A victim lost money after receiving a phone call from someone allegedly impersonating a law enforcement investigator, according to the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office.
The victim reported receiving a call from a suspect who claimed the victim had missed federal jury duty and had active warrants for their arrest. The caller then instructed the victim to pay fines associated with the purported warrants.
After transferring the money, the victim drove to the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office. The suspect then stopped communicating with the victim.
The Sheriff’s Office reminded residents that law enforcement agencies will not call and demand payment of a fine to avoid arrest.
