Deputy Kotter responded to a fraud report on February 19 involving a phone scam targeting a Stafford resident.
The victim reported receiving a call from an individual claiming to be with the Wells Fargo fraud department regarding a suspicious charge. The caller instructed the victim to move funds from their bank accounts into a new account allegedly set up to protect their money.
After transferring the funds, the victim contacted the legitimate Wells Fargo fraud department and learned the call was a scam. The bank immediately opened an investigation and closed the compromised accounts. The victim was advised to retain all documentation and follow up with Deputy Kotter as needed.
