A Stafford County resident reported being deceived into transferring funds after receiving an email that appeared to come from Apple Federal Credit Union.
Deputy Wagner responded to the fraud complaint on Streamview Drive.
According to the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office, the email claimed that suspicious activity had been detected on the victim’s account.
The suspects instructed the victim to purchase Bitcoin through a Cash App account linked to a card associated with the suspects.
After the initial transfer, the suspects claimed that the victim’s other bank accounts had also been compromised and instructed the victim to transfer additional funds.
The victim made further transfers before recognizing the activity as fraudulent and ending communication with the suspects.
The victim subsequently contacted the legitimate Apple Federal Credit Union and was informed that the communications were part of a scam.
A police report was needed as part of the investigation.
