The Stafford County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a reported identity theft incident involving a credit card account opened without the account holder’s authorization.
Deputy Courtney responded to Whitson Woods Place on October 14 after a resident reported receiving an email indicating that a credit card account had been opened in their name.
The victim contacted the legitimate financial institution to investigate the notification.
According to the sheriff’s office, the bank closed the unauthorized account and began its own investigation.
The victim also froze their credit to help prevent additional unauthorized activity.
No suspects have been identified.
