A Stafford County resident reported losing money in an elaborate scam involving suspects allegedly impersonating USAA.
The victim received a phone call and text messages purportedly from USAA claiming someone was attempting to launder money through the victim’s account. The suspects allegedly instructed the victim to withdraw funds, telling the victim that USAA was working with Chase Bank and that a cash advance was necessary.
After obtaining the funds, the victim was instructed to deposit money into the suspects’ account at a nearby PNC Bank. The victim made the deposit but later contacted the legitimate USAA after being unable to access their account and learned it was a scam.
A deputy advised the victim to change their banking information and notify their bank.
