Fredericksburg, VA — If you use the Canal Path or Heritage Trail, police are asking you to be extra cautious right now.
Over the past week, three women have been approached and sexually assaulted in broad daylight along these well-traveled paths. In each case, the suspect grabbed the victim and ran off.
According to a police release , the first incident happened March 19 on the Canal Path. A man described as about 5’10”, between 25 and 35 years old, approached a woman, grabbed her, and fled.
Just a few days later, on March 23, it happened again—this time on the Heritage Trail. The suspect in that case is described as slightly taller, between 5’11” and 6’1”, with a medium build.
Then, on March 25 around 12:40 p.m., a third assault was reported on the Heritage Trail. Police say this suspect may be Hispanic, around 5’7”, with short black hair.
Right now, investigators haven’t said whether the same person is responsible for all three, but the pattern is hard to ignore.
What stands out is how quickly these encounters happen. The suspect approaches, grabs the victim, and disappears on foot—leaving very little time for anyone nearby to react.
Police say they’re increasing patrols along both trails and are asking the public to help. If you were in the area or have doorbell or trail-adjacent camera footage, they want to hear from you.
There’s also a bigger concern here. Detectives are still working an unsolved sexual assault from October 2025 along the Canal Path near Cossey Pond. That case involved a different suspect description, but it underscores a troubling reality—these trails, while popular, can also be isolated in stretches.
For now, police are urging people not to panic, but to stay aware. Walk with someone if you can. Keep your phone accessible. And if something feels off, trust that instinct.

This is an active investigation—and one the community will be watching closely.
